Also you are a fool to seek the kind of art you don’t like. You are a fool to read classics because you are told to and not because you like them. You are a fool to aspire to good taste if you haven’t naturally got it. If there is one place where it is idiotic to sham it is before a work of art.

we’d gotten a tent pavilion, a couple of kegs of beer, there was cake, he made a speech, it rained, there was a rainbow, there was grilling, then a campfire with marshmallows. lots of new cousins and other relatives to play with. after all this, once we got back, i asked my kids what their favorite part of the trip was.
the answer:

the safety instruction cards from the airplanes.
i let them both keep one and they both study them over breakfast each morning now. it’s like their own little newspaper, filled with misfortune and human misery; little ant-like people escaping from burning airplanes, life rafts, evacuation routes, how to float in the ice cold ocean. they fucking love them.

airplane safety cards.

I woke up out of the ether with an utterly abandoned feeling, and asked the nurse right away if it was a boy or a girl. She told me it was a girl, and so I turned my head away and wept. ‘All Right,” I said, ‘I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool - that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.’
