Lights out in your mind.
It’s your first date with her. The calm July evening accentuates the silence. You want to grab her hand but yours won’t stop sweating. You want to say something that will make you look interesting but everything gets caught in your throat. Instead she grabs your hand and asks “What are you thinking about?” You want to sound romantic so you say “You.” Sitting under the stars you share a cigarette and talk about nothing in particular. You drive her home and ask for a second date before you kiss her.
Lights out in her room.
You turn from the film you’re watching and kiss her. Almost instinctively she drops the TV remote she was toying with and runs her hands thru your hair, slowly. But her kisses no longer leave your lips tingling. This is familiar, mundane and almost predictable at this point. You know exactly where this is going. It’s gone there a dozen times before. The same hand movements, almost the same order, every time. The thing that excited you only a few months ago, no longer does. It’s a song played so much it’s lost its power. It’s a cliché. You’re too young to be stuck in a rut.
Lights out in your room.
You can’t get to sleep. You stare at the ceiling then at your phone, hoping for a call. Your music can’t soothe you to sleep. Thoughts run screaming through your head. The regrets, the bad decisions, the words you can’t take back. Your mouth got you into trouble again. You make resolutions for yourself, promising to treat her better if she’ll take you back. You haven’t let go, not yet. It’s only been a week.
